paille-malie game

After Utrecht University was founded in 1636, the Vroedschap of Utrecht decided in 1637 to lay out a maille court for the paille-malie game, partly for the benefit of the students.

This decision is recorded in the resolution of February 6, 1637:

On monday the 6th of February,

Agreement has been found to foster the city with a maille court to lend exercise and entertainment to the civilians and residents, as well as to make the maille game a frequent game of the city and the academy.

And it is therefore most appropriately judged that Oudtwijkerveldt, namely the land stretching next to the inn ‘t Gulde Vlies behind the bolwerck Lepelenburch to a path from Outwijck around the Gildbrugge.”
