Jacobus Bellamy and Pieter Ondaatje

The poet Jacobus Bellamy (1757-1786) and the revolutionary politician Pieter PJ Ondaatje (1758-1818) lived in this house. Bellamy was a student of theology and a forerunner of the romanticism trend in poetry. His tomb is located in the Nicolaïkerk. Quint Ondaatje was the son of a Tamil pastor, Willem J. Ondaatje, from Ceylon (Sri Lanka) and Hermina Quint from Amsterdam. He was one of the most important leaders of the Patriot Movement, whose ideals were to give the Netherlands a modern, democratic form of government. The center of this movement was from 1782 to 1787 in Utrecht.
